What is matcha green tea?

Matcha green tea is a fine powder made from shade-grown tea leaves. A few weeks before harvest, the plants are covered. After picking, the stems and veins are removed and the leaf, called tencha, is stone-ground.

That's all matcha is made of: the leaf. You whisk it into water and drink the whole thing, which is why the colour is so vivid and the taste has that smooth, umami finish.

Matcha tea benefits

What's in your cup

01

Whole leaf

You drink the leaf itself, so you take in its natural plant compounds, including the catechins (antioxidants) green tea is known for.

02

L-theanine

An amino acid that develops when tea is shade-grown. Many people find it makes matcha feel calmer and steadier than coffee.

03

Caffeine, gentler dose

Roughly 35–70 mg a teaspoon, against 95–200mg in a cup of coffee.

04

A simple swap

Whisked with water, matcha is naturally low in calories, which makes it an easy replacement for sugary drinks.

Matcha vs green tea: what's the difference?
Know Your Cup

Matcha vs green tea: what's the difference?

Same plant, different cup. Green tea is steeped and the leaves are thrown away. Matcha is the whole leaf, stone-ground and whisked in, so you drink all of it.

  • Matcha: the whole leaf, stone-ground and whisked in.
  • Green tea: leaves are steeped, then thrown away.
  • Matcha tastes richer and smoother; green tea is lighter.

Questions

Matcha, explained simply.

What is matcha green tea made of?

Only shade-grown green tea leaves, with stems and veins removed, stone-ground into powder.

Is matcha the same as green tea?

Same plant, different preparation. Matcha is the whole leaf, ground and drunk.

Can I make iced matcha?

Yes. Whisk the matcha first, then pour over ice and add water or milk.

What are the benefits of matcha?

It's whole-leaf tea, so it contains catechins (antioxidants) and L-theanine, plus caffeine. Many people enjoy it as a steadier alternative to coffee.

Does matcha have caffeine?

Yes, roughly 35–70mg a teaspoon, depending on how much you use. It's usually lower than a cup of coffee.

Can matcha help with weight loss?

Not on its own. It's low in calories when whisked with water, so it's an easy swap for sugary drinks, but no tea is a shortcut.

Is matcha healthy? Are there side effects?

Most healthy adults enjoy it. It contains caffeine, so go by your own tolerance. If you're pregnant, nursing, caffeine-sensitive or on medication, check with your doctor.

Ceremonial vs everyday matcha?

Ceremonial is smoother and naturally sweet, for whisking with water. Everyday is bolder, for lattes, smoothies and baking.

Which matcha should a beginner buy?

Vanilla or Berry. Move to Ceremonial once you enjoy it plain.

How do I make matcha without a bamboo whisk?

Sift half a teaspoon into a cup, add a little water at 70–80°C and froth with a small electric frother. A jar with a tight lid works too.

How do I make an iced matcha latte?

Whisk first, pour over ice, top with cold milk.

Why is matcha more expensive than green tea?

It's shade-grown and stone-ground, a slower process, and you drink the whole leaf.

Where can I buy matcha powder in India?

Right here. Our Japanese matcha ships across India. Check current shipping terms at checkout.

How should I store matcha?

Sealed, cool, dry, away from light and strong smells.
